Moon breaks school, conference records in outdoor 10,000 meters

ST. LOUIS - Spencer Moon of the Simpson College men's track and field team reset the record book once again by breaking the school and conference records in the outdoor 10,000 meters at the Washington University Distance Carnival.

Moon broke his own school and also broke the conference record set by Wartburg's Jacob Green last year. The senior clocked a time of 29:18.21, beating both records by just under 10 seconds.

"It was great to see Spencer pick up from where he left off from indoor season," said Storm director of track and field and cross country Heath Moenck. "He looked terrific and it bodes well for a special senior season outdoors."

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Moon took second place in a field full of nationally ranked runners, ranging from NAIA to Division I.
  • After Iowa Western's Geofrey Ronoh led virtually the entire race, Moon kicked hard down the backstretch on the final lap to catch Ronoh and two other chasing runners.
  • Moon and Ronoh dueled during the last 50 meters, with Ronoh barely edging Moon at the line. Moon's time is good for 18th in Division III history.
  • Joseph Sams made the podium in the 100 and 200 meters in Pella at the Central Invitational. Sams took second in a personal best 22.53 in the 200 meters and then clocked an 11.07 for third in the 100 meters to tie his personal best.
  • Max Cleveland comfortably won the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 14.88. Teammate Brenden Godbout placed second in the event in a time of 15.24 and also won the 400 meter hurdles, clocking a time of 55.36.
  • Carter Berkey made his season debut, competing for Simpson for the first time since last year's outdoor championships. The fifth-year senior won the event with a jump of 6.88 meters.
  • Doug Berg placed second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:18.95 and Ean Warrick took third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:23.50.
  • Clarke Latcham placed second in the men's javelin with a toss of 52.26 meters, improving his personal best by 12 meters and moving into 10th all-time in school history in the event.
