Storm reach double-digits wins on Saturday
INDIANOLA, Iowa -- For the first time since the 2012-13 campaign, the Simpson College women's tennis team has reached the double-digit win plateau. The Storm held off Grand View in a 5-4 battle to win their third out of four matches to begin the spring on Saturday.
Simpson (10-5) competed at home for the first time this calendar year while sweeping the Vikings (4-12) in both of their matches in 2020-21.
The Storm won two of three bouts in doubles play to garner an early 2-1 edge. Megan Grubb and Aubrey Ocheltree captured an 8-6 victory for their first win as a duo in the No. 3 slot. The top pairing of Emily King and Anna Wanek tallied their 12th victory of the season in an 8-5 set.
Grand View made a comeback in singles play by winning the No. 2 and No. 6 matches to hold a 3-2 tilt. Donni Kinghorn halted the momentum with 6-4, 6-0 set triumphs to win her match at No. 5 singles.
Grubb fell in her singles competition for the visitors to hold the upper hand once again at 4-3.
The next two matches for the Storm went into tiebreakers. Kennedi Wright dropped her first set, but won her next 7-6, with a 7-4 tiebreaker to help push the match to a third frame. Wright fought off Molly Harvey in a 10-7 tiebreaker to win the battle. Wanek cruised to a win in her first stanza, but had to play to a 15-13 tiebreaker in set two for the team's fifth point to secure the victory.
