Simpson claims league triumph over Coe
INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Simpson women's tennis team came away with a 5-4 victory against Coe on Saturday for the program's first win over the Kohawks since Sept. 4, 2004.
In a match that started inside the Buxton Tennis Complex and finished at Norwalk Middle School due to darkness, the Storm (7-3, 5-2 A-R-C) claimed four straight singles matches against Coe (4-5, 3-4 A-R-C) to help secure the American Rivers Conference win.
Megan Grubb and Kennedi Wright won their fourth match this fall as a pair in an 8-0 sweep to earn the first point for either team at No. 2 doubles. The Kohawks would rebound by winning the next two doubles matches, including an 8-7 triumph over Emily King and Anna Wanek to hand the duo just their third loss this season.
With the match at 3-1 in favor of the visitors, Simpson won the next four matches to steal the momentum and pull off the comeback. Grubb won handily at No. 3 singles in 6-0, 6-0 sets and King tallied 6-0, 6-1 sets to grab her seventh victory.
Wanek had little problem with collecting her 10th victory at No. 1 singles for the Storm in 6-1, 6-3 sets. Wright dropped her first set, 6-4, but fought back with 6-1, 6-2 sets to hand Simpson it's fifth victory of the match. Donni Kinghorn competed in a three-set thriller that was interrupted when both squads shifted playing surfaces to have a venue with lights, but fell short during No. 5 singles play.
Up Next
Simpson currently holds sole possession of third place in the league standings and will compete next in the A-R-C Individual Tournament from Oct. 16-17. The match against Loras that was originally scheduled to be played on Friday has been moved to Oct. 19, a time has not been set yet.
