Wanek tabbed A-R-C Athlete of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- After going 2-0 at No. 1 singles and helping the Simpson women's tennis team secure a comeback victory over Central last week, junior Anna Wanek has been named the American Rivers Conference Female Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Wanek becomes the first Simpson student-athlete to garner A-R-C Athlete of the Week honors this season and the first women's tennis player to do so since Kayla Reusche received the award on Oct. 3, 2018.

In her first season with the Storm (2-1, 2-1 A-R-C), Wanek's 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) win against Central's Karleigh Schilling was crucial in the turning point of the match. Simpson was down 4-2 before Wanek's match ended and her triumph was the first of three straight to help the team defeat the Dutch, 5-4, for the first time since April 16, 2013.

Wanek teamed up with Emily King on Saturday to win the only doubles match for the Storm verse their rival. The duo claimed an 8-3 win to move to 2-1 as a unit this season.

The Urbandale, Iowa native logged the lone victory for the Storm in Friday's 8-1 loss at Wartburg. Wanek won 6-2, 6-4 to remain unbeaten for the year.

The Storm return to the court tomorrow for a road trip to Buena Vista. The conference clash begins at 4 p.m.
