Storm blank Northwestern in spring opener

ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- The Simpson College women's tennis team started its spring slate the same way the squad opened the fall, with a 9-0 victory.

The Storm (8-4) traveled to Northwestern on Saturday for their first match since Oct. 22 after winning their final three of four matches before the break. This is the first time since the 2011-12 campaign Simpson has produced three shutouts in a season.

In doubles play, Simpson allowed the Red Raiders (1-9) to win just six games between the three matches. The No. 1 duo of Anna Wanek and Emily King won their ninth match as a pair, while Megan Grubb and Donni Kinghorn played together for the first time. Kennedi Wright and Aubrey Ocheltree won 6-2 in their first time on the court together as well.

Wanek didn't lose a step from the fall as she won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 singles to remain perfect with a 15-0 record this season.

Grubb, King, Kinghorn and Wright all won in straight sets for the Storm. Ocheltree battled at No. 6 singles after dropping her first set. The freshman was able to win the next two 6-4, 6-3 to keep Simpson's shutout intact.
