Wartburg holds off Simpson in league battle

WAVERLY, Iowa -- The Simpson women's tennis team squared off with the top squad in the American Rivers Conference on Friday at Wartburg, but came up short in an 8-1 battle against the Knights.

Junior Anna Wanek remained perfect at No. 1 singles for the Storm (1-1, 1-1 A-R-C) this year by winning 6-2, 6-4. Junior Emily King looked poised to follow her classmate after winning the opening set, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. Wartburg's (6-0, 4-0 A-R-C) Olivia Phillips bounced back by claiming the next two sets, 6-1, 6-4, to clinch the victory.

Junior Megan Grubb played tough at No. 3 singles, but came up short after forcing a third set. Grubb lost the opening set, 6-4, before reeling off a 6-4 win of her own to even things up, but dropped the third set.

King and Wanek aimed to give Alyssa Guse and Ambriel Jacobs their first loss of the year in doubles play in the No. 1 slot, but the Knights held firm to win 8-5.
