Wanek receives second straight A-R-C honor

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- It feels like déjà vu for Simpson women's tennis player Anna Wanek as she was tabbed the American Rivers Conference Co-Female Athlete of the Week for the second straight week, the league announced Monday.

The junior received the second and third A-R-C Athlete of the Week honors for the Storm women's tennis program over the last two weeks to join Kayla Reusche as the only recipients since Sept. 17, 2006.

Wanek improved to 7-0 at No. 1 singles for Simpson by winning four matches last week, with only one reaching a third set. Her toughest match came against the reigning conference most valuable performer, Devon Bourget of Luther, as the first set went in favor of Bourget, 6-2. Wanek rebounded with a 6-4 win and then cemented the rally with a 17-15 set to secure the victory.

The Urbandale, Iowa native joined Emily King at No. 1 doubles to produce three victories, one coming against an A-R-C opponent. The duo just missed out on going a perfect 4-0, but dropped an 8-6 match for only their second loss this season as a pair.

Wanek leads the A-R-C in wins with seven during singles play and also paces the league in doubles victories with five. Her five wins against league foes in singles competition is tied for first.

Simpson (4-3) will host Grand View tomorrow for a 4 p.m. match for its first contest inside the Buxton Tennis Complex since Sept. 26.
