Schmalz scores twice, Storm shut out Concordia-Chicago

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Shutouts are starting to become a theme for the Simpson women's soccer team as they produced another one in a 3-0 win over Concordia-Chicago inside Buxton Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Storm (4-0-1) have not conceded a goal through their first five matches of the year and are the last American Rivers Conference team to do so.

Rachel Neumann and Aspen Brockhouse held firm in the net for Simpson. Neumann played the first 75 minutes of action and tallied four saves, while Brockhouse did not face a shot. Neumann improves to 3-0-1 in her first season with the team.

For the team's offense, Cami Schmalz scored two goals in the contest and Miki Schmidt added one to help the cause.

Schmalz started the scoring off in the 16th minute with a low shot that skidded past the goalie. Madi Strecker sent the ball sailing towards the box and a Cougar (0-5-1) defender deflected it to an uncovered Schmalz, who then converted on the opportunity.

On the next scoring play, Tatum Tremain sent a corner near the backside of the box, allowing Sky Delzell to head the ball over to an open Schmidt, tallying her second goal of the year.

Schmalz increased her team lead to three goals in the 55th minute off a pass from Lizzie Arnburg. Arnburg sent a nice through ball to a sprinting Schmalz, allowing her to get her left boot on it to provide some cushion for the squad in the heat.

• Before the game started, Simpson was one of 15 schools in the country to not allow a goal this season.
• This is the team's first time scoring three goals in a game all year and first since a 3-0 win last season on Oct. 5 against Buena Vista.
• Arnburg and Tremain both tallied their first career assists in the game.
• Eight players saw action today for the first time all season, Baylee Ratliff, Maria Veasey, Tuyishime Florance, Logan Pettit, Logan Christensen, Maya Gault, Bailee Cook and Bre Waugh.

"We came out with an edge today. A number of players were hungry to score goals and it showed. Every player chipped in and did their part, I'm proud of the groups' effort.
