Women’s soccer grabs draw on the road

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- After 110 minutes of action, the Simpson women's soccer team finished in a scoreless draw at Wisconsin-Platteville Sunday afternoon.

The Storm (2-0-1) defense held tough throughout the whole match and only allowed three balls to get in the hands of sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Neumann. Neumann secured her third straight shutout to start her career for Simpson.

On offense, the Storm had five close shots in the extra minutes of play, with three in the first overtime and two in the final. Madisen Strecker had an attempt in the final seconds of the 100th minute, but the Pioneer (0-3-1) goalie made one of her seven saves to send the game into another period.

Megan Roberts looked for her second goal of the year in the 101st minute, but was unable to with another Wis.-Platteville save. Baileigh Nagy had another good look for the Storm with a header in the 102nd, but sent it wide of the left post.

In the opening period of the nonconference battle, Dani Marquez ended with shots in the 44th and 45th minutes in hopes of sending the squad into intermission with a lead, but the Pioneer wall was still up in goal.

Madison Strecker, Marquez and Roberts each rattled off two shots, with all of them ending on-frame.

Notes
• This is the team's first tie since the 2016 season, where Simpson had three. The last time the Storm had a scoreless draw was in the season opener on Sept. 1 of that same year against Grinnell.
• After starting 2-0-1, this is Simpson's best start since the 2011 campaign after the team started 4-1.

"We remained organized and in control of possession for much of the game, but just couldn't connect on the final ball. Again, I think we were stronger after taking some halftime adjustments and applying them quickly. We are continuing to grow with each half.

Scoring goals is the hardest part of soccer and today was a product of that reality. We were very dangerous on both overtimes, but just unable to find the answer today. Our defensive unit was again up to the task this afternoon. Chemistry is building back there and we are playing with a lot of confidence."
