Quick start leads Storm to 103-55 road triumph

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Simpson women's basketball team rode a 22-4 run in the first five minutes of play to capture a 103-55 triumph over Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday to push the team's winning streak to six games.

The Storm's (10-3, 2-2 A-R-C) defense made an impact all game by allowing the Prairie Wolves (5-7, 2-3 A-R-C) to connect on 28.6% of their shots for their lowest output since making 27.9% on Jan. 19, 2019 against Luther.

Cassie Chubb tallied her second-straight double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds after going 5-for-8 from deep. Cameron Kincaid filled the stat sheet with 18 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists in 18 minutes of work. Kia Rasmussen added 16 points and five assists, while Cassie Nash poured in 11 points and Jenna Taylor contributed 10 off the bench.

Nebraska Wesleyan's Caitlyn Navratil was averaging 25.9 points per outing coming into the contest to lead the league, but the Storm's tight defense held her to nine points on three makes. This is the first time all season Navratil has scored fewer than 12 points in a game.

During the Storm's opening run, the offense was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3. Simpson then pushed the advantage to 32-10 to close out the first stanza by shooting 57.1% overall and 66.7% from deep.

Nebraska Wesleyan started the second on a 10-7 spurt to try to trim the deficit with the game at 39-20. A basket by Kincaid launched the offense on a 17-0 scoring spree to pull away. Rasmussen tallied nine points during the run to help extend the advantage to 56-20. The host closed the gap to send the game into halftime at 58-27.

In the first minute of the second half, the Storm put seven points on the scoreboard with the aid of two steals and a triple from Claire Johnson. The Prairie Wolves ended the third with 18 points on 7 of 17 shooting for their largest output of the game.

After allowing Nebraska Wesleyan to start the fourth on a 6-2 run, the Storm reeled off 16 straight points to go over the century mark and capture a 101-51 tilt with 3:40 to go. Alesha Henderson scored the last bucket to become the 14th player to score for Simpson in the contest.

• The Storm came five points shy of reaching its previous high of 108 points, which was set on Dec. 2, 2017 in a 108-73 win against the Prairie Wolves.
• On the glass, Simpson racked up 56 rebounds for its most since grabbing 57 against Curry on Dec. 21, 2018.
• Chubb has now scored in double figures in every game but one and is shooting 47.1% from behind the arc.
