Storm reel off 85-56 triumph at Waldorf

FOREST CITY, Iowa -- The Simpson women's basketball team opened on a 30-6 run to cruise to an 85-56 victory on the road at Waldorf on Saturday as Cassie Chubb led the team with 15 points to close a two-game losing skid.

The Storm (5-3) shot 50% from the floor to remain first in the American Rivers Conference in shooting. Along with Chubb's 15 points, the senior grabbed eight rebounds to pace the squad. Madie Bacon contributed 11 points for a new-season high and Hattie Rhodes added 10, as both came off the bench.

Simpson sat with an 8-4 advantage over the Warriors (2-7) in the first quarter before reeling off 15 straight to widen the gap to 23-4. The Storm then closed the first quarter on a 7-0 spurt to take a 30-6 lead into the second stanza. As a unit, the team connected on five 3-pointers in the period, while the strong defense held Waldorf to two baskets.

In the second quarter, a bucket by Cassie Nash pushed the advantage to 30 points at 38-8 with 4:22 remaining in the half. Simpson ended the quarter by shooting 50% from the field and 60% from behind the arc to hold a 48-21 tilt.

During the third frame, the Storm shot their best of the afternoon with a 64.3% clip, while holding Waldorf to under 10 points in a quarter for the second time in the contest. Simpson extended on its lead in the stanza to 42 points at the 1:11 mark for its largest of the game after Bacon made a basket to put the game at 69-27..

The Warriors fought back in the fourth as they outscored the Storm 27-16, which was two points less than they scored in the previous three quarters combined. The hosts ended the contest by shooting 33.3% overall and 35% from 3.

• Simpson emptied its bench in the game as it produced 44 points, while Waldorf's bench accounted for seven points.
• Out of the 15 players that appeared on the court for the Storm, 13 scored at least two points and 10 had four-or-more points.
• On the glass, the Storm grabbed 42 rebounds, their most since hauling in 42 against Nebraska Wesleyan on Feb. 19, 2019.
Claire Johnson dished out six assists as the team ended with 25 for the most in a game since tallying 25 at Dubuque on Jan. 5, 2019.
• Head coach Brian Niemuth is now two wins away from claiming his 600th career victory at the helm for Simpson. Niemuth is currently ninth in career victories for active NCAA Division III women's basketball coaches.
