Nash scores 26, Storm close out Music City Classic with win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Simpson women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games after an 83-71 victory over Washington and Lee to end the Music City Classic on Monday night to close out the Storm's 2019 portion of their schedule.

Cassie Nash exploded for a career-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting with the help of a perfect effort at the free throw line with eight makes. The reigning American Rivers Conference Player of the Week, Cassie Chubb, posted her first double-double of the year with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Claire Johnson added 14 points and Kia Rasmussen tallied 12 as four of the starters ended in double figures.

The Storm (9-3) shot 44.4% from the floor and 31.8% from the 3-point line, while the Generals (5-6) hit 38.3% of their attempts. Washington and Lee struggled from behind the arc with an 18.5% clip on five makes in 27 attempts.

Simpson captured a lead as high as 11 points in the opening quarter as Nash scored eight of her points in the frame. The Storm drilled four triples to take a 26-17 advantage into the second stanza. The Generals trimmed the deficit in the second period by outscoring Simpson, 22-19, on 50% shooting. The Storm ended the half with a 45-39 tilt.

Simpson used a 9-0 run in the third to extend its lead back to 12 at 58-46 as Nash tallied six and Cameron Kincaid added three points during the spurt to lead the offense. The Storm held firm to close out the third frame ahead at 65-54. Rasmussen led the team in the fourth with seven points as the Storm grabbed its largest lead of the game at 14.

• Nash's 26 points and Chubb's 12 boards were the most produced by a Simpson player in both statistical categories this season.
• Chubb now has three career double-doubles, with tonight's performance being her first since 15 points and 11 rebounds against Buena Vista on Dec. 5, 2018.
• This is the team's eighth double-figure triumph this season.
• The team's field goal percentage is the lowest since shooting 43.1% against Coe on Dec. 4, 2019.
• The offense dished out 10 assists in the win, its lowest since passing out eight against Marietta on Dec. 20, 2018.
