Loras tops Simpson in A-R-C Quarterfinals

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The fifth-seeded Simpson College women's tennis team was defeated by fourth-seeded Loras in the first round of the American Rivers Conference Automatic Qualifier Tournament on Tuesday.

Anna Wanek and Emily King pushed their win streak to five with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, but the Duhawks (11-6) claimed the other two matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles competition.

King tied things up for the Storm (4-11) with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. The teams then traded match points at No. 1 and No. 3 as Wanek won 6-1, 6-1 over Isabel Schwabe and Caroline Hutchinson topped Donni Kinghorn 6-0, 6-2.

Loras went in front 4-3 following a victory at No. 6 singles and picked up its final match point with a hard-fought, three-set win in the No. 4 slot. Kennedi Wright and Dorothy Deans battled to the third set in their No. 5 matchup, but it went unfinished after the Duhawks clinched their fifth point.

The Duhawks will advance to face top-seeded Luther on Friday at 4 p.m.
