Tranquilino, Grubb earn silver at A-R-C Individual Championship
SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The tandem of Bella Tranquilino and Megan Grubb finished runner-up in Flight B doubles to highlight the Simpson College women's tennis team's performance at the American Rivers Conference Individual Tournament over the weekend.
Tranquilino and Grubb earned a spot in the quarterfinals with an 8-5 victory over Coe's Michaela Pinto and Jaden Fuqua before collecting back-to-back 8-4 wins over Luther and Nebraska Wesleyan teams to set up the championship match. The freshman-senior duo fell just short of the gold medal in an 8-4 defeat against Dorothy Deans and Sara Backus from Loras.
In the A-doubles bracket, Anna Wanek and Emily King took down Luther's Bruna Costa and Riley O'Donnell in dominating fashion but couldn't get past Central or Luther's pairings in a couple of close 8-6 losses.
Kennedi Wright and Donni Kinghorn were defeated in the third round of doubles, while Anna Schewe teamed up with Dubuque's Santa Roman but did not move past the second round.
On day one, Wanek and King both made it to the quarterfinal round of the A-singles bracket. Wanek earned a bye in the first round before defeating Coe's Jania Carter-Johnson 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the final eight. King topped Luther's Riley O'Donnell 6-3, 6-1 and Sofia Sackett 6-3, 6-4.
Wright and Kinghorn each picked up first round victories in their singles brackets but were knocked out shortly after. Tranquilino and Schewe lost their opening round matches in individual play.
The Storm will return to action in the spring.
