Truman State holds off Storm in nonconference battle

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Simpson College women's tennis team hosted NCAA Division II Truman State University on Sunday to close out a two-match weekend, but the visitors came out on top, 7-2.

The tandem of seniors Anna Wanek and Emily King won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles to earn a point for the Storm (2-3). The Bulldogs (2-0) were able to secure victories in the other two bouts to grab the 2-1 lead.

In singles play, Wanek collected the lone triumph for Simpson. She won the opening set, 7-6, after securing the tiebreaker at 7-3. In the second set, Wanek closed the door with a 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.

King pushed her match to three sets to try to win her fourth contest of the season. She lost the first set but rebounded with a 6-1 triumph. Truman State's Akansha Negi held on to win the third set.

Freshman Bella Tranquilino competed in tough sets at No. 6 singles for the Storm. She played to 6-4 in both sets for the narrow defeat. Junior Kennedi Wright just fell short in the No. 5 slot with losses of 6-3, 7-5.

The ITA Midwest Regionals are on the docket this weekend for the Storm. Simpson travels to Whitewater, Wisconsin to compete from Sept. 24-27.
