Held, Wanek earn A-R-C weekly awards
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The American Rivers Conference tabbed seniors Brady Held and Anna Wanek as the Athletes of the Week in their respective sports on Monday.
Held was named pitcher of the week for the second time this season and fourth time in his career, while Wanek earned her sixth-career weekly tennis honor and the first of her senior campaign.
The first member of the program's 200-strikeout club, Held improved to 4-0 on the season in a 9-1 win over Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out 11 batters in six innings, his third game this season with double-digit strikeouts. In addition to his performance on the mound, Held led the team with a .438 batting average and .550 on-base percentage. He tallied seven hits and scored nine times across four games.
Wanek went undefeated in both singles and doubles to lead the Storm women's tennis team in last week's action. On Tuesday, she came back to beat Belinda Weddle of Northwestern-St. Paul in three sets after falling in a first set tiebreaker and teamed up with Emily King to post an 8-0 victory in doubles. She followed that with two more singles wins on Sunday, beating Saint Mary's Tessa Hurst (6-3, 6-1) and Truman State's Allison Brown (7-6, 6-2). Wanek and King tallied 8-3 and 8-2 victories at No. 1 doubles on Sunday.
The Storm baseball team is back in action Tuesday evening at Central, while the women's tennis team next competes on April 19 against Iowa Central.
