Thompson climbs Simpson record book at Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa -- Trey Thompson raced his way into the record books on Saturday for the Simpson men's track and field team at the Wartburg Qualifier.

Thompson crossed the finish in 8:45.62 in the 3,000 meters, which is the third fastest mark in program history. The senior was two seconds shy of taking over second and seven away from the top spot, which was set by Dave Halferty in 1988.

The 4x400-meter relay of Travis Tupper, Jordan Coughenour, Kirk Wicks and Emmitt Wheatley ended in 3:22.25 for seventh. Craig Garrison ended his indoor season with a time of 22.84 in the 200 and Chase Wetterling clocked a time of 53.27 in the 400.

Caleb Striegel was the only performer in a field event for the Storm in Waverly, Iowa. Striegel had a toss of 14.73 meters.

Simpson concluded its indoor season today and will be back in action on Saturday, March 23 at the Grand View Invitational.
