Storm wrestling closes November slate at Coe Invite
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Simpson College wrestling team was led by a quartet of third-place finishes at the Coe College Invite on Saturday.
Jason Padilla (133), Zach Stewart (141), Sam McCoy (149) and Robert Silva (157) each finished third in their brackets while six other wrestlers placed in the top-8 for the Storm.
Padilla opened the day with an 11-3 major decision over Lauden Edwards but fell by two points in the semifinal round against Clarence Lee-Green of North Iowa Area. He then picked up an 8-3 win before prevailing 4-2 over teammate Joe Weaver in the third-place match.
After falling 9-8 in the second overtime period against Graceland's Jackson Wenerg in the quarterfinals, Stewart went a perfect 4-0 on the back side of the bracket to place third. He picked up a trio of bonus-point wins along the way thanks to two pins and a major decision.
McCoy had his most successful outing of the season with a 3-1 record on the day. He pinned Brody Hawtrey (NIACC) in the first period of his opening match and later posted a 10-9 victory over Hawtrey after advancing to the third-place match with a 21-10 major decision.
Silva went 4-1 with his only loss coming to the eventual winner of the 157 bracket. He dominated his first match 20-1, posted a 4-2 decision over Cornell's Killian Perrigon, and ended the day with back-to-back pins.
Weaver (133) and Shyler Langley (174) each placed fourth at their weights, while Josh Bower (149), Jakob Slavin (165) and Shane Mathias (184) all won their final matches of the day to finish seventh, fifth, and seventh, respectively. Nathan Keating (174) placed eighth.
