Simpson defeats Iowa Wesleyan in non-conference action

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa -- The Simpson College wrestling team picked up its first dual win of the season on Wednesday night thanks to a 24-19 victory over Iowa Wesleyan.

The Storm (1-2) won six of eight contested matches and had two bonus-point victories.

Carter Logue started the dual with an 8-6 win at 125 pounds to give Simpson an early 3-0 lead. Zach Stewart's second pin of the season helped the Storm gain a 9-4 lead through three matches, and back-to-back wins by Robert Silva and Jakob Slavin doubled Simpson's point total, 18-7. Silva pinned his opponent in 2:31 and Slavin defeated Adin Garay 4-2.

After the Tigers (0-1) used a forfeit at 174 to pull within five points, Shane Mathias gave Simpson a little breathing room with a 6-0 decision to set the score at 21-13. Needing a win to seal the victory, Andrew Wolff edged Elias Cordero 9-8 in the 197-pound match. Iowa Wesleyan collected the final six points of the night via forfeit at heavyweight.

Simpson will compete for the final time in November at the Coe Turkey Open this Saturday.
