Martinez’s runner-up finish paces Simpson at Grand View Open

PLEASANT HILL, Iowa -- The Simpson College wrestling team was one of 41 teams to compete at the Grand View Open on Saturday. The Storm sent 16 wrestlers to the tournament and were led by Chris Martinez' runner-up finish in the 141 bracket of the freshman/sophomore division.

Martinez, a freshman from El Paso, Tex., continued his strong start to the season with a 5-1 record on the day, moving his season mark to 7-2. He collected two 10-1 major decisions around three decisions to earn a spot in the finals against Northern Iowa's Connor Thorpe. In the championship bout, Thorpe posted a major decision fueled by six takedowns.

Zach Stewart finished the day with a 3-2 record in the open 141 bracket. He won his first match by blanking Bobby Robinson (unattached) 14-0, but came up short the next round in a 4-2 decision against Andrew Flora from Iowa State. The junior worked his way through the consolation bracket with a pair of decisions before falling to Flora once more just one match away from automatic placing.

Shyler Langley also went 3-2 during the tournament with all three of his wins coming by fall. He pinned Kesier's Brett Bosserman in 1:45 as well as Mitchell Clark (Keiser) and Trevor Senn (Grand View) in the consolation bracket after dropping his second match 11-6. Langley's day ended in an overtime loss to Hayden Wempen of Missouri Valley.
