Storm drop season-opening dual to Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The Simpson College wrestling team opened the 2021-22 season with a 30-18 loss to Cornell on the road.

The Storm (1-0) picked up wins in the first and last matches of the dual but the Rams (1-0) won six of the other eight to come away with the win in both team's openers.

Dylan McChesney made quick work of his first match this season, pinning Nathan Bednarcyzk in just 35 seconds to give the Storm a quick 6-0 advantage. The fall was two seconds quicker than McChesney's fastest career pin set last March when he defeated his opponent from Carthage in 0:37 at the NWCA National Championships.

Two weight classes after McChesney, Zach Stewert also pinned his opponent in the opening period to collect his first win with the Storm. The junior transfer finished his match against Grant Harbor in 2:31 to put the visitors up 12-6.

Cornell won the next three matches to grab a 20-12 lead. Shyler Langley pulled Simpson within five points thanks to an 8-5 decision over Jacob Sherzer, but the Rams put the dual away for good with back-to-back wins at weights 184 and 197. Colton Kinnison closed the night with a slim 5-4 decision over Zachary Finn in the heavyweight match.
