McChesney, Kinnison record pins in Simpson’s first A-R-C victory

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Dylan McChesney and Colton Kinnison opened and closed the dual with pins and the Simpson College wrestling team posted its first win in American Rivers Conference action with a 24-21 win over Buena Vista.

Along with McChesney (125) and Kinnison (285), Zach Stewart (141), Robert Silva (157) and Shyler Langley (174) were all victorious for the Storm (6-4, 1-3 A-R-C). Simpson earned bonus points in four of its five wins, while the Beavers (1-10, 0-6 A-R-C) managed two in their five wins.

After giving up a takedown in the first period, McChesney tied his match with a penalty point and an escape in the second. Byron Fleming logged another takedown before the frame was up, but McChesney would get the win in the third as he pinned Fleming at the 5:43 marker to give Simpson an early 6-0 tilt.

Buena Vista trimmed the Storm's lead in half with a 5-4 overtime victory at 133 pounds, but Stewart gave the home team those three points back with a 5-4 win of his own in the ensuing match. Fueled by six points in the first period, Silva pushed Simpson's lead out to seven, 13-6, with a 10-0 major decision before the halfway point of the dual.

Langley tallied a takedown and two four-point nearfalls in the first three minutes of the 174-pound match and added another six points in the second period on his way to a 16-0 technical fall that helped Simpson grab an 18-12 advantage. The Beavers wouldn't go away easily though as they posted back-to-back wins at 184 and 197 to claim their first lead of the night.

Trailing 21-18 going into the final match, the Storm needed at least a major decision from Kinnison to win the dual. The heavyweight junior got out to a 2-0 lead with an opening-period takedown and extended his lead to three with a penalty point in the second. Kinnison then chose top going into the last two minutes, which proved to be a good decision as he was able to turn his opponent and collect the dual-winning points for the Storm with a fall in 5:41.

The win gives Simpson six on the year, the most since posting six during the 2016-17 season. Langley pushed his season dual record to 7-1, while McChesney (6-0), Silva (6-2) and Stewart (6-1) each earned their sixth win of the season in dual action. McChesney and Stewart have each won eight matches in a row.
