Storm drop road contest at Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Simpson College women's basketball team suffered a 72-58 setback at Wartburg on Saturday afternoon.

After Cassie Nash converted a layup to cut the Wartburg lead to three with under a minute to play in the first quarter, the Knights went on a 17-0 run to claim a 33-13 advantage with 6:31 left in the opening half. The home team made 5 of 7 attempts from 3-point land during the stretch and went into the break with an 18-point lead, 46-28.

Wartburg, one of two teams still undefeated in conference play, led by as many as 23 in the second half as Jaedon Murphy hit a three early in the fourth to place the score at 63-40. The Storm (2-6, 0-3 A-R-C) doubled up their hosts 18-9 the rest of the way, getting six points each from Nash and Haley Rasmussen to set the final margin at 14 points.

In her first game back from injury, Nash led the Storm with 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks while tying for the team-high in assists (2) and steals (2). Anna Wanek and Rasmussen each logged 10 points and Elle Street added eight.

The Knights (6-2, 3-0 A-R-C) had four players reach double figure scoring led by Maggie Wilkins with 15 points off the bench. Wartburg outrebounded the Storm 52-31 with a 19-7 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Simpson goes out of state to play two games in Nashville, Tenn. over break. The Storm will face Berry on Dec. 19 and Franklin on Dec. 20 before returning to Waverly on Dec. 29-30 for their final two nonconference matchups of the season.
