Luther sweeps Simpson on Senior Day

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College softball team competed for the final time in 2022 on Sunday against Luther. The Norse took both games from the Storm, winning 4-0 and 9-2.

With the two wins, Luther claimed the No. 5 seed in the American Rivers Conference Tournament beginning on May 6.

In between games, Simpson recognized its group of eight seniors. Olivia Allen, Megan Crockett, Mackenzie DePhillips, Liv Erickson, Brooke Fonley, Randie Richmond, Maxie Saceda-Hurt and Brooke Tucker were all honored during the ceremony.

Game One: Luther 4, Simpson 0
Luther (21-13, 8-8 A-R-C) scored the only runs of the game in the sixth inning. The Norse cashed in on the Storm's second error of the frame and Emily Versnik launched a three-run bomb to place the score at 4-0.

Taryan Barrick-Wessels led the team with two hits and tossed five scoreless innings before the guests tallied their four unearned runs.

Game Two: Luther 9, Simpson 2
The Storm (19-18, 4-12 A-R-C) struck first in game two but the Norse later broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run homer in the top of the sixth. Luther added two more runs in the frame and pushed the margin to seven with a pair of scores in the last inning.

In their final game at Simpson Softball Complex, Saceda-Hurt and Crockett paced the team with three and two hits, respectively. Crockett plated the Storm's only two runs; she doubled in Simpson's first run in the third and scored Saceda-Hurt with a base-hit in the fifth.

Grinnell doubleheader cancelled
Simpson's season finale on Tuesday has been cancelled due to injuries on Grinnell's roster.
