Storm win two of three in Florida tripleheader

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Simpson College softball team won two out of three games on an action-packed Thursday at The Spring Games. The Storm earned a 12-4 run-rule victory over Salem State, picked up their first shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over Carthage, and came up short in a tight 3-1 battle with Rhodes.

The Storm (11-4) cap off their 14-game Florida schedule with two games on Saturday, the first against Washington and Jefferson at 9 a.m. and the second against Curry at 11:30 a.m.

Game 1: Simpson 12, Salem St. 4
The Storm offense exploded for 17 hits in their first game with Taryan Barrick-Wessels, Megan Crockett and Maddie Luderman each tallying three and four others registering two. Simpson had seven doubles in the game, the most since recording seven in a 15-1 win over Concordia (Ill.) on March 7, 2013.

Crockett drove in the Storm's first run and finished with a team-high three RBI. Simpson scored two more in the first inning on a double from Alexis Ehlers and then added three in the second and six in the fifth to initiate the game-ending run rule over the Vikings (0-7).

Game 2: Simpson 4, Carthage 0
Barrick-Wessels (5-2) tossed seven scoreless innings for her fifth complete game win of the season and the Storm's first shutout of the year. She limited Carthage (3-6) to just four hits and had one strikeout.

Simpson took a slim 1-0 lead in the first and stretched it to four with three runs in the third. Olivia Allen drove in two of the three runs with a two-out single to right field.

Game 3: Rhodes 3, Simpson 1
The Lynx (8-11) were limited to just three hits in the game but they all came in the same inning and resulted in two runs. Madison Bromley started the frame with a double to left field and Nikki Greuel singled to the same spot before advancing on the throw to give Rhodes two runners in scoring position. Hannah Schweiger would bring them home two at-bats later to give the Lynx a key 2-0 advantage.

A leadoff walk came around to score another run for Rhodes in the seventh. Simpson managed to prevent the shutout when Kate Kriegel scored on a Luderman single, but a strikeout ended Simpson's comeback hopes shortly after.
