Storm split with Spartans on cold, windy day

INDIANOLA, Iowa – A total of 37 runs, including 14 on 11 homers, were scored at Simpson Softball Complex on Wednesday as Simpson and Dubuque split an American Rivers Conference doubleheader on a cold and windy day in Indianola.

Simpson (17-10, 2-4 A-R-C) came out on top 13-12 in a wild first game and Dubuque (15-5, 3-3 A-R-C) took the nightcap 11-1 in six innings.

The Storm have a week to prepare for their next contest taking place at home on April 13 against Nebraska Wesleyan. The conference doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m.

Game 1: Simpson 13, Dubuque 12
With the wind howling over 20 mph throughout the game, the two teams went blow for blow in a high-scoring affair. The first inning was a home run fest as Dubuque sent three balls over the fence for a quick 4-0 advantage before Simpson responded with two in the home half. The game's sixth home run was recorded in the top of the second as Lauren Brown jogged around the bases for the second straight inning.

In the bottom of the third, Maxie Saceda-Hurt launched her first career home run to open a four-run inning that put the Storm ahead 9-8. The Spartans tied the game in the fifth but Simpson put key runs on the board with a two-RBI double from Karlie Hill and a two-run homer from Liv Erickson, who also hit her first-career long ball. The runs proved to be the difference maker as Dubuque nearly came back to tie the game again in the seventh inning.

Hill was nearly unstoppable during the contest as she recorded a hit in her first four at-bats before reaching on a fielder's choice in the sixth. She was a triple away from the cycle and drove in a career-high five runs.

The trio of Erickson, Kate Kriegel and Randie Richmond all tallied three hits and combined to score eight of the Storm's 13 runs. Maddie Luderman also had multiple hits with two to go with two RBIs.

Simpson recorded season-high hits (18), RBIs (13) and home runs (4) during the contest.

Game 2: Dubuque 11, Simpson 1 (6 innings)
The Spartans controlled the game from start to finish, scoring three runs in each of the first, second and sixth innings en route to the run-rule victory. Dubuque tallied 12 hits in the game with three more home runs and a pair of doubles.

Simpson took advantage of a Spartan error in the bottom of the fifth to prevent the shutout. Luderman, who went 2-for-3 in the game, singled to shortstop to put the Storm on the board.
