Storm drop rubber match on senior day

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Simpson College softball squad dropped the rubber match to Luther in a 7-1 loss on senior day in the home finale on Sunday.

Before the game, the Storm (13-16, 10-11 A-R-C) recognized their eight seniors: Emily Bell, Brynna Bowman, Megan Crockett, Camrey Leo, Georgia Porter, Caitlynne Shadle, Carlyn Stanley and Sara Trent.

The Norse (22-13, 11-10 A-R-C) used 11 hits to move into fourth in the American Rivers Conference standings, as Simpson connected on four to remain in a tie for fifth.

The scoring started early for the visitors as they pushed a run across in the top of the second on an error by the Storm. Luther managed back-to-back run-scoring singles in the third to increase its lead to 3-0.

In the fourth, the Norse extended its lead to 7-0 with the help of a two-run single and a two-run homer. Crockett broke up the no-hitter in the fourth with a single up the middle and Trent followed with a walk to put a Simpson runner in scoring position for the second time during the game.

A wild pitch scored Randie Richmond in the fifth to trim the deficit to 7-1. Luther's Kendra Cooper worked around a bases-loaded jam by securing three-straight outs to prevent Simpson's offense from doing further damage.

Simpson aimed for a late rally in the seventh with Shadle ripping a double to lead off the frame. Cooper proved once again she can work around runners in scoring position and tallied three-quick outs for the win.

Shadle finished with two hits to pace the offense.
