Storm split doubleheader at Iowa Wesleyan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa -- The Simpson College softball team collected 21 hits in its doubleheader at Iowa Wesleyan on Wednesday. The Storm dropped the opener 10-2 before ending the twinbill with an 11-3 triumph.

Randie Richmond and Sara Trent each had four hits to pace Simpson (9-14) during nonconference action. Carlyn Stanley struck out 10 Tiger (3-7) batters in game two for the complete-game victory.

Game One: Iowa Wesleyan 10, Simpson 2
Only one run was scored during the first four innings between the two clubs. Iowa Wesleyan plated a run in the third after a one-out walk scored on a double.

Simpson grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth. Sara Trent and Megan Crockett connected on a pair of singles and Taryan Barrick-Wessels drove them both in on a base hit.

The lead was short lived as the Tigers erupted for nine runs in the fifth to enforce the run rule by clubbing eight hits and forcing two Storm errors.

Trent finished with three of the team's eight hits in the opener.

Game Two: Simpson 11, Iowa Wesleyan 3
The scoring continued for Iowa Wesleyan in game two as the hosts tallied two runs in the first.

The Storm ripped back-to-back doubles in the second to grab a quick 2-1 tilt. Maddie Luderman later scored in the frame on a passed ball to widen the gap to 3-1.

The offense continued its scoring stretch with three in the third and four in the fourth. Simpson tallied seven hits during the span to grab a 10-3 lead. Karlie Hill drove in the team's last run in the fifth.

After allowing the two runs through the first three batters, Stanley struck out the next six inside the circle. This was the first time all season a Storm pitcher had at least 10 strikeouts in a single contest and just the third occurrence among American Rivers Conference pitchers.

Richmond and Luderman both had two doubles in the game, while Luderman drove in four runners.
