Simpson falls twice to No. 19 Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa -- Georgia Porter and Claire Oetting each drove in a run to lead Simpson College softball in a doubleheader against No. 19 Wartburg on Saturday. The Knights won both contests by a score of 10-1.

Porter ripped a double in the first game for the Storm's (5-6, 3-2 A-R-C) only extra-base hit on the day. Simpson ended with three hits, compared to the Knights' (12-3, 3-2 A-R-C) 19.

Game One: Wartburg 10, Simpson 1 (five innings)
Simpson trailed after the bottom of the first but tied things up with a run in the second. Emily Bell scored after Oetting put the ball in play to reach on a fielder's choice. The offense left the bases loaded with only one out to keep the game tied.

Both teams remained scoreless through their next two at-bats. Bell was able to strike out two batters to keep the game in reach. The Knights pushed a runner across in the bottom of the fourth on a single to take a 2-1 advantage.

Wartburg's power was showcased in the bottom of the fifth after the offense clubbed three home runs to win the game by run rule and clinch the opener.

Game Two: Wartburg 10, Simpson 1 (five innings)
The momentum carried into the nightcap for Wartburg. The hosts plated three runs in the first and a two more between the second and third innings to capture a 5-0 lead after three.

Porter provided the power for Simpson in the fourth inning to break the scoreless drought. The senior connected on a ball for a run-scoring double for her first extra-base hit and RBI of the year.

The Knights waited an inning to score five runs in the fifth to sweep the doubleheader.

Brooke Tucker tallied three strikeouts in the circle after entering in relief for Simpson.
