Storm fall against No. 9 DePauw, defeat Fontbonne

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- It was groundhog day for the Simpson College softball team after splitting its doubleheader for the second day in a row to start the season.

The Storm (2-2) fell 5-4 to No. 9 DePauw in Saturday's opener before claiming a 4-2 triumph against Fontbonne to end the day.

Game One
DePauw 5, Simpson 4

The Storm just missed out on upsetting the top-10 Tigers after securing a 3-2 advantage through four innings. Camrey Leo drove in Megan Crockett after clubbing a double. Two batters later, Taylor Stamm connected on a two-run single to help Simpson take the lead.

The advantage did not survive long as DePauw piled on two runs in the bottom half of the frame for a 4-3 tilt. Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth before Crockett started the sixth with a double and was moved over by a groundout from Emily Bell. Leo added to her stats in the next at-bat to score Crockett on a single to knot the game.

With the game tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, DePauw was down to its last out before going into extra innings. After Paige Price started the inning with a single, Carlyn Stanley was able to get two outs while Price sat at third. The Tigers pushed Price across home with a single to win the game.

Crockett and Leo both had two hits in the game and a double each, while Sara Trent grabbed a two-bagger as well.

The scoring started right away for Simpson in the first to take control. Randie Richmond started the game with a single and advanced to second on an error. Richmond later scored on an error by the right fielder to give the Storm a quick 1-0 lead.

The Griffins knotted the game at 1-1 in the second inning on an RBI single.

In the fifth, Simpson connected on four hits to score three runs on two outs. Karlie Hill tallied her first career hit and RBI in the inning as Fontbonne committed two errors in the frame.

Richmond ended with two hits from her leadoff spot and Crockett had two more hits to end with four on the day.

Taryan Barrick-Wessels struckout five in her first career start and victory. She allowed five hits and one earned run.

Fontbonne committed seven errors in the game and had six hits, compared to Simpson's nine.
