Spree breaks record to open outdoor season

PELLA, Iowa -- Mason Spree broke a 15-year old program record, and Cat Lucht and Jamie Glanz won their respective events to highlight the opening weekend for the Simpson College track and field teams on Friday at the Central Invitational.

Spree had a distance of 48.52m (159-2) to win the hammer toss. His result was nearly 10 feet further than the previous program record set by Robert Delsing in 2006 and 12 feet longer than the runner-up performer.

Lucht had a time of 2:34.35 to just clip her teammate, Abby Loecke, to win gold in the 800 meters. Sophie Hall finished third in the race to help the Storm grab the top-three placings. Lucht also ended third in the 1,500 meters with a career-best time of 5:07.35. Glanz won the heptathlon by winning three of the seven events. 

Craig Garrison (200), Clay Billheimer (800) and Carter Berkey (triple jump) tallied second place in their respective events. Steven Cruz-Castro, Ryan Courtney, Tyler Williams and Berkey all had top-three placings to pad Simpson's results.

Katelyn Mangold raced to third in the 400-meter hurdles and Audrey Arnold received bronze in the heptathlon. Makayla Baker recorded two fourth-place finishes in her two appearances in the sprints.
