Moon, Spree named CoSIDA Academic All-District

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Simpson College sophomore Spencer Moon and senior Mason Spree were named College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District in the men's cross country and track and field division, CoSIDA announced Thursday.

Moon carries a 3.65 grade-point average as an accounting and management major and Spree holds a 3.88 GPA while majoring in computer science and management information systems. Spree was just named a CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in football on Wednesday.

A Lake City, Iowa native, Moon excelled in the fall, winter and spring for the Storm. With the cross country program, he finished fourth at the American Rivers Conference Championships for the team's best individual mark since 1989. Moon helped Simpson end third overall for its best result since 1990.

With track and field, he qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the 5,000 meters for the Storm's first men's distance qualifier since 1996 after he broke a 37-year-old school record in the event. Moon tallied all-conference honors in the indoor distance medley relay, 1,500 (outdoor) and 10,000 (outdoor) events. He ended the year with school records in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter races, and was part of the record-setting DMR squad.

In the field events, Spree broke the weight throw and hammer records. The Waverly, Iowa native was named A-R-C Athlete of the Week on Feb. 15 after winning two events at the Buena Vista Triangular. His distance of 51.86 meters at the league championships earned him a runner-up performance in the weight throw. At the end of the indoor season, Spree received recognition on the USTFCCCA All-Central Region Team in the weight throw.

Moon and Spree advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in mid-August.
