Storm drop road conference tilt at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Simpson College men's basketball team led at halftime, but a strong second half from Dubuque powered the home team to victory at Stoltz Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Storm (7-10, 1-7 A-R-C) gained control of the game going into halftime, but the Spartans (14-3, 6-3 A-R-C) used a much-improved second half to claim the win. Andrew Gibb led the Storm with 20 points, marking the fourth time in the last five games he has scored at least 20 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Dubuque got off to a quick 6-0 start, but Simpson kept the game in check, as a Jack Hutchinson 3-pointer tied the game at 18-18 just past the halfway mark of the first half.
  • Simpson took its first lead of the game at 25-24 with a layup from Gibb and then closed on a 14-7 run over the final 5:30 to take a 39-31 lead into halftime.
  • Simpson took its largest lead of the game, 44-33, after a jumper from Gibb, but the Spartans immediately went on an 18-0 run, holding the Storm scoreless for over eight minutes.
  • Dubuque went up by as many as eight as time started to wind down, but Simpson responded by cutting it to one twice.
  • Andrew Curran nailed a triple to cut a five-point Dubuque lead to two with under three minutes to go, but the Spartans closed on a 9-2 run, with Simpson's points coming at the end from Hutchinson.

  • It was only Simpson's second loss of the season after having a halftime lead.
  • Andrew Gibb continues his stretch of having scored in double figures in every game this season.
