Knights defeat Storm in conference affair

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Simpson College men's soccer team was bested by Wartburg, 3-1, in conference action at Buxton Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Storm (7-9, 4-3 A-R-C) also honored eight seniors for their contributions to the program. Matt Hasken, Louie Hoehle, Sam Hying, Ethan Larbi, Ronaldo Ordaz, Ben Reynolds, Andrew Russell, and Nate Thompson were all celebrated after the match for the Storm.

GOAL SUMMARY

  • The Storm opened the scoring in the 13th minute. After a poor clearance, Reynolds controlled the ball and reared up for a strike from about 25 yards out that went into the top corner over Wartburg's goalkeeper.
  • The Knights (9-1-6, 4-1-2 A-R-C) responded from a free kick. Edvin Rizvic shot went to the far side instead of over the wall, with his shot hitting the crossbar and bouncing over the line.
  • Wartburg turned the game on its head in the 39th minute. A swift counter attack allowed Aidan Mott for a 1v1 situation, finishing past Storm keeper Kegan Trebilcock.
  • Despite a bright start to the second half, Wartburg doubled its lead in the 58th minute. The Storm could not initially clear the ball and Rizvic picked up a long cross, firing it back across goal for a tap-in from Paul Devine.

OTHER MOMENTS

  • The Storm nearly got one back from some great combination play. Ordaz found Tim Sedlock who turned his man and played a splitting through ball to the on-running Hasken, but his shot hit the top of the left post.
  • From a Storm corner, the Wartburg defense could not clear and Anthony Chavez saw his close-range effort blocked by a sprawling Brennon Woody in the Wartburg goal.

NOTABLE

  • Wartburg extended its narrow lead in the all-time series, 17-15-4.
  • The Knights have won three of the last four matchups including last season's 1-1 draw.

  • Reynolds netted the first goal of his season and the fourth of his career.
