Nielsen named IIAC Athlete of the Week
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Simpson women's basketball player Kate Nielsen earned Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Athlete of the Week honors for the period ending Dec. 11, the conference office announced Monday.
Nielsen, a junior forward from Urbandale, Iowa, averaged 17.0 points and 8.5 rebounds as the Storm posted a pair of victories last week.
She scored 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds in a 78-45 win over Luther on Dec. 7 and followed with 15 points and seven rebounds in a 56-52 come-from-behind win over Wheaton (Ill.) on Dec. 10. Making her first start of the season against the Thunder, she converted an and-one in the final minutes to give the Storm a 52-50 lead.
Nielsen and the Storm are 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the Iowa Conference. Simpson's next contest is set for Saturday, Dec. 17 when the Storm travel to River Falls, Wis. to take on UW-River Falls in a 3 p.m. tipoff.
