Nielsen, Haynes named Student-Athletes of the Month

Women's basketball player Kate Nielsen earned Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week honors twice and wrestler Brian Haynes went 8-3 during the month of December, giving them Simpson Student-Athlete of the Month honors for the last month of 2011.

A junior forward from Urbandale, Iowa, Nielsen led the Storm in scoring (14 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg) in six games during the month, helping the Storm go 4-2. She earned Iowa Conference Female Athlete of the Week and Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors twice, once on Dec. 11 and again on Jan. 1. She posted two double-doubles in the stretch, against Luther and No. 25 Thomas More at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas.

Brian Haynes, Wrestling
A freshman 157-pounder from Gladstone, Mo., Haynes posted an 8-3 record during the month, including a 3-1 mark at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas where the Storm went 3-1 as a team. Led by Haynes, the Storm picked up their fourth dual win of the season while in Las Vegas, the most by the program since the 2007-08 campaign. Of his eight wins, three were pins and two were major decisions.
