Simpson spoils Loras’ conference title hopes with 3-3 draw

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Simpson College men's soccer team played the spoiler in a 3-3 double-overtime draw against Loras on Sunday.

In the final match of the season, the tie prevented the Duhawks (5-0-3, 5-0-3 A-R-C) from becoming the American Rivers Conference Champions. Dubuque was awarded the crown for the second time in school history and first since 2010.

The A-R-C clash started in favor of the visitors as the Storm (3-2-2, 3-2-2 A-R-C) failed to clear the ball to score an own goal in the 13th minute. The Duhawks were able to widen the gap with a goal in the 25th on a header by Michael Brandt.

After not scoring in the first half, Simpson opened the second with a goal in the 48th minute. Ian Dean sent a ball in front of the net that Enrique Idehen headed in for his fifth of the season.

In the 60th minute, Jordy Triana-Vasquez came sprinting towards the box to net his fifth goal of the season to knot the contest at 2-2. Triana-Vasquez was horizontal with the turf when he was able to head the ball in off a pass from Baraka Ellie.

The Duhawks regained the advantage in the 80th minute of a quick goal. With time winding down and Loras set to raise the trophy, Mason Madren scored his first goal of the season in the 87th to tie it once again.

The two overtime periods remained relatively quiet as Loras managed four shots and Simpson attempted just one. The Duhawks placed one on-goal in the 95th, but Simon Van Den Abbeele was there for the save. He kept it tied once again in the 109th with another save.

Van Den Abbeele finished with 10 saves for a new career high in the season finale.

Before the match, the Storm honored their five seniors. Julius Cooper, Justin Gilmour, Mason Madren, Reza Mohammadi and Collin Nikolai were all recognized.
