Simpson blanks Dubuque to win 2-0

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Head coach Rick Isaacson remains unbeaten in season openers after the Simpson College men's soccer team tallied a 2-0 victory over Dubuque on Saturday to begin their fall-to-spring slate.

The Storm (1-0-0, 1-0-0 A-R-C) and Spartans (0-1-0, 0-1-0 A-R-C) were identical on offense with seven shots each, with three being on target. Dubuque held a slight 5-3 corner kick edge.

In his first match in a Simpson uniform, sophomore Mateaus Lewis made his presence known by collecting the game-winner in the 16th minute off a ball from sophomore Alan Imamovic. Lewis was able to put a toe on the ball to slice it by the goalie.

In the start of the second half, junior Baraka Ellie was fouled inside the box to earn a penalty kick in the 50th minute. Ellie took advantage and placed the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season and first since Oct. 23, 2018.

Junior Simon Van Den Abbeele tallied his first career shutout in only his third start. Van Den Abbeele produced three saves, including a diving block to prevent the Spartans from scoring.
