Rout starts early for Storm in 9-2 victory

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Six first-half goals and a 35-5 shot advantage carried the Simpson College men's soccer team to a 9-2 triumph against Buena Vista on Tuesday.

The nine goals are the second most a Simpson team has scored during the Rick Isaacson era. Isaacson coached the Storm (2-0-0, 2-0-0 A-R-C) to an 11-0 thumping over Crown on Sept. 1, 2012.

Simpson now sits atop the American Rivers Conference standings after extending their streak to 13 contests without a loss to the Beavers (0-2-0, 0-2-0 A-R-C).

It took the Storm 16 minutes to score a goal in their season opener on Saturday, but tonight Simpson scored four goals in 17 minutes to begin the onslaught.

Justin Gilmour connected on his first goal of the season in the fourth minute off a pass from Mason Madren. Enrique Idehen followed that up with a goal two minutes later with the aid of Mateaus Lewis.

Idehen flicked a pass off his heel to Jordy Triana-Vasquez for his first goal of the season and sixth of his career. Idehen scored another goal a few minutes later to put the Storm up 4-0.

Spencer Young scored in the 25th and 54th minutes for his first points since the 2018 campaign. Ben Reynolds scored twice as well for Simpson in his first career contest. His second goal gave the Storm an 8-0 advantage. Matt Hasken tacked on the last goal for the Storm in the 75th minute.

Buena Vista snapped the scoring drought in the 64th minute. Braedon Evans had his penalty kick saved by Simon Van Den Abbeele, but scored on the ricochet off Van Den Abbeele's gloves. The Beavers tallied their second goal in the 87th minute.

Van Den Abbeele tallied two saves in 72 minutes of work in goal for Simpson.
