Simpson returns to win column against Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- In a match that felt lopsided due to the shot differential, the Simpson College men's soccer team survived a scare to win 4-2 over winless Coe on Tuesday inside Buxton Stadium.

The Storm (3-1-1, 3-1-1 A-R-C) attempted 31 shots with 16 on-goal in the American Rivers Conference clash. The Kohawks (0-5-0, 0-5-0 A-R-C) tallied 11 shots and had six on-frame.

Justin Gilmour opened the scoring lid in the 15th minute coming off a pass from Mateaus Lewis. Coe knotted the match less than 10 minutes later on a Maclean Buckley goal.

In the 19th minute, Simon Van Den Abbeele made a diving save with an outstretched arm to keep the contest tied. He would make two saves in the half and finish with four.

Peter Gaspari tallied his first goal of the season as Matt Hasken assisted on it in the 39th minute. Simpson's excitement didn't last long when the visitors tied the match in the 44th minute with the team's second goal. With that goal, Coe doubled its scoring output for the spring through five matches.

With the game tied through the end of the first half, both teams remained tied until Jordy Triana-Vasquez ran free to slice the ball by the keeper for his fourth goal off the season thanks to a pass from Enrique Idehen in the 61st minute.

Matt Hasken capped off the scoring in the 72nd minute with his second goal of the season. Gilmour provided the assist for his third point of the evening.

Simpson has now won 10 games in a row against Coe and moved its record to 24-2-1 all-time against the Kohawks.
