Cord leads decathlon after day one at Kansas Relays

LAWRENCE, Kan. - John Cord has competed in a number of events during his track and field career at Simpson, but he has never taken part in a multi-event competition.

There is a first time for everything, and Cord is taking full advantage of his as he leads the decathlon after day one of the Kansas Relays.

Enduring cold, rain and wind, Cord scored 3,390 points to top the field of 13 individuals at one of the nation's premier track meets.

The senior from Atlantic, Iowa, has won Iowa Conference championships in three different events throughout his career. On Wednesday, he took part in the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash.

"John was solid in all five events today," head coach Dave Cleveland said. "He wasn't completely satisfied, but given the conditions and the fact that this is his first decathlon, I am very pleased with his effort."

The final five events will be the 110-meter high hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and the 1500-meter run.
