Storm take sixth at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Aaron Arment took second place in two events in leading the Simpson men's track and field team to a sixth-place finish of 10 teams at the Cornell Hilltop Invitational on Saturday.

Simpson scored 53 points, just four behind Northern Iowa in fifth. Dubuque won the meet with 98 points, followed by St. Ambrose with 76, William Penn with 72 and North Iowa Area CC with 68.

A sophomore on the track but in his first year running for the Storm, Arment broke the tape in 6.96 seconds to place second in the 60-meter dash before leading off Simpson's 4x200-meter relay team. Arment, Brad Vogel, Tyler Kenny and Brice Sheeder combined to run a 1:32.71.

Arment added a third, top-five performance in the 4x400 relay, where he, Sheeder, Leif Jeppson and John Cord combined for fourth (3:31.36).

In all, Simpson saw 11 events place in the top five on Saturday.

Miles Kirts and John Warnke represented admirably in the Mile, as the freshman Kirts took third (4:35.38) and the senior Warnke finished fifth (4:38.95).

Cord provided Simpson with its other third-place finish, taking bronze in the long jump with a leap of 6.38 meters.

In addition to his doing his part in the 4x200, Vogel had a solid day individually as well. He took fourth in the 200 (23.47) and fifth in the 60 (7.07).

The Storm's other fourth-place ribbons came from Sheeder in the 400 (52.12), Jeppson in the 800 (2:01.22) and the team of Kirts, Nick Nolte, Nick Yaeger and Andrew Mayes in the distance medley relay (11:20.23).

Simpson travels to the Grinnell Open next Saturday, Feb. 9.
