All American: Cord takes sixth in decathlon at nationals
LA CROSSE, Wis. - Simpson's John Cord used a monster effort in the javelin throw to propel himself to a sixth-place finish in the decathlon at the 2013 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
A senior from Atlantic, Iowa, Cord scored 6,529 points to earn All-America honors with the sixth-place finish. He becomes Simpson's first All-American decathlete since 1989 and gives Simpson its best finish at outdoor nationals since 1998.
Cord slipped out of All-American contention going into the javelin throw, the ninth event on the docket. He came through with a toss of 184-feet, 5 inches to win the event and move into fourth overall. He closed out the decathlon with a 4:46.80 in the 1500 meters to take sixth.
