Track & Field teams, three individuals earn academic honors

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson men’s and women’s track and field teams along with three individuals earned recognition for academic performance in the 2012-13 season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

For the second year in a row, the Simpson men and women met the requirements to be named Division III All-Academic Track & Field teams, the only school in the Iowa Conference to have both teams qualify.

To qualify, teams need to post a cumulative grade point average of 3.10 or higher. The Storm women registered a 3.32 team GPA while the men’s team came in a 3.11.

Additionally, women’s multi-event athlete Jordan Maher, men’s multi-event athlete John Cord and men’s distance runner Joe Farrand earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined efforts in competition and in the classroom.

To be named as an individual, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and met either of the following athletic standards: a student-athlete must have competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.

Maher, a senior from Baxter, Iowa, ranked 30th nationally in the discus throw while maintaining a 3.92 GPA in biology.

Cord, a senior from Atlantic, Iowa, earned All-America honors with his sixth-place finish in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships while maintaining a 3.36 GPA in math and economics.

Farrand, a rising junior from Kansas City, Mo., ranked 32nd nationally in the indoor Mile while maintaining a 3.80 GPA in music.
