Farrand, Elbert lead Storm at Iowa Invite

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Joe Farrand ran the second fastest Mile in school history and Jamie Elbert placed second in the 800 meters to lead the Simpson track and field teams at the Iowa Invitational on Friday night.

Farrand ran Simpson's fastest Mile since 1986, crossing the finish line in 4:15.35, nearly five seconds faster than his previous career best. He finished behind runners from Iowa and Western Illinois and Central's Eli Horton. The time is currently 16th in the nation.

John Cord provided the Storm men with their only first place effort on the day, winning the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 9 inches. He also placed sixth in the high jump, clearing 6-1 1/2.

Brad Vogel cruised to third in the 60-meter dash, finishing in 7.06. He added a sixth-place finish in the 200 (22.92).

Brice Sheeder came in sixth in the 400 meters (52.12), giving the men six, top-six efforts.

Elbert led the women's squad, running a season-best 2:20.90 in the 800 to take second.

April Sigmund placed third in the 400 meters (1:02.31) and Bayley Fleshner took fourth in the long jump (16-1 1/2) and sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.18).

Mary Doherty added fifth in the pole vault (8-2 1/2) and Sammy Nelson came in sixth in the 800 (2:26.29).

No team scores were kept at the meet.

Next up for the Storm is the Iowa Conference Championships, which take place Feb. 22-23 in Dubuque. The meet begins Friday, Feb. 22 and concludes Saturday.
