Farrand, Cord win titles on day one at IIAC Championships

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Joe Farrand won the 5,000-meter run and John Cord captured a conference title in the long jump to lead Simpson on the first day of the Iowa Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

The Storm will enter the final day of the Championship in third place with 34 points, behind Wartburg (80) and Central (56) and ahead of Dubuque (33), Loras (26), Luther (13), Coe (7) and Buena Vista (6).

Farrand's kick was too much for Central's Eli Horton in the 5,000. The sophomore patiently sat behind Horton and Horton's teammate, Cole Decker, for a majority of the race before pulling away in the final laps. Farrand finished in 15:22.08.

A regular jack of all trades, Cord won a conference title in the third different event of his career on Saturday. The senior won the long jump with a personal-best leap of 22 feet, 7 3/4 inches, topping his previous best of 22-6 1/2 set in 2010. The senior won the conference's outdoor triple jump championship as a freshman in 2010 and won the javelin throw as a sophomore in 2011. Throughout his career he has also been a member of the basketball and baseball teams.

The 4x200-meter relay team of Aaron Arment, Brad Vogel, Devan Quam and Brice Sheeder finished in second place with a school-record time of 1:30.22. Loras won the relay, just .04 seconds ahead of the Storm in 1:30.18.

Vogel and Arment added strong efforts in the 55-meter dash preliminaries. Vogel had the No. 3 qualifying time (6.49) and Arment came in right behind at No. 4 (6.52).
