Simpson wins series finale against Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Simpson College baseball team overcame a late three-run deficit to top Wartburg 6-5 in the series finale on Sunday. The Knights took the first game 10-4.

After Simpson's bats were held to a season-low four hits on Saturday, the Storm (16-16, 7-11 A-R-C) exploded for 23 hits during today's doubleheader. Matthew Marquez paced the team with five hits in nine at bats and Kolton Arnold chipped in four highlighted by his second home run of the year. The duo drove in eight of the Storm's 10 runs.

Game 1: Wartburg 10, Simpson 4
The Knights (21-14, 11-7 A-R-C) scored all of their runs in two innings, taking an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third and distancing themselves with six runs in the eighth inning after Marquez and Luke Willis had cut the gap to 4-2 with a pair of RBIs.

The Storm strung together four singles in the ninth with two runners scoring on Arnold's base hit through the right side, but the offensive burst ended shortly after with a pair of strikeouts.

Both teams finished with 11 hits as Kaleb Bauer, Brennen Lemke, Marquez and Willis each registered multiple hits for the Storm. Simpson left 10 runners on base, while Wartburg stranded 13.

Game 2: Simpson 6, Wartburg 5
The Storm erased a three-run deficit with four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the eighth. Simpson loaded the bases for Arnold who got the scoring started with a single to left. Marquez drove two in with a base hit down the left field line and Keaton DeKock put the visitors ahead for the first time in the series with an RBI-single.

The Knights went down in order in the final two innings as Zach Hollingsworth picked up two of his three strikeouts en route to his first win of the season. Brett Kauzlarich threw the first six innings, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out three.

Marquez finished the game with three hits and three RBIs, both career-highs. Arnold tallied three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Simpson closes out its 2022 home schedule against Luther on April 29-30. Simpson will then travel to Rock Island to face Augustana in a non-conference battle on May 2 and Dubuque to take on Loras in the regular season finale on May 6-7.
