Storm split four-run decisions with Titans

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Simpson College baseball team split a pair of four-run decisions with Illinois Wesleyan on Friday, collecting a 7-3 victory in game one before falling 9-5 in game two.

The two teams came into the day riding five-game win streaks and earned their respective wins via clutch scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning. As the home team in game one, the Storm (8-2) pushed across four runs in the second-to-last frame to come away with the victory. The roles then reversed in game two as the Titans (7-6) scored three in the home half of the sixth to distance themselves and earn the split.

Simpson will play its final game at the RussMatt Invitational on Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m. ET against SUNY Brockport.

Game 1: Simpson 7, Illinois Wesleyan 3
The Storm tallied a run in each of the first, third and fifth innings, and the game stood tied at 3-all midway through the sixth after Illinois Wesleyan scored a couple in the fourth and tied the game with an RBI-single in the sixth.

In the bottom half of the inning, Simpson loaded the bases with a walk and back-to-back singles from Matthew Marquez and Kaleb Bauer. Keaton DeKock plated the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly, and Brady Held provided the Storm some extra cushion with a bases-clearing double to right center. Trey Castile, who came on in relief of Colton Major in the fifth, struck out the first Titan in the seventh and the game ended with the Storm's second double play of the morning.

Held finished the contest 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Marquez scored once and was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Kolton Arnold drove in one with a pair of hits.

Game 2: Illinois Wesleyan 9, Simpson 5
The Titans snapped the Storm's six-game winning streak in the nightcap, breaking a 4-4 tie with five of the last six runs scored. They scored three of those with the help of five hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth, and the Storm were unable to overcome the deficit in their final at-bat.

Chris Miller and Ty Cowley opened the game with back-to-back doubles to give Simpson a quick 1-0 lead. A trio of RBIs from Held, Luke Willis and Ryan Willis tied the game in the fourth, and Bauer scored the Storm's final run on a sacrifice fly from Miller in the sixth.

The Storm tallied double-digit hits for fifth time this season with 10. DeKock, Held, Miller and L. Willis all contributed two apiece.
