Simpson holds off Clarkson for fifth straight win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Simpson College baseball team got out to a five-run lead in the sixth inning and held on for a 9-7 victory over Clarkson on Wednesday, the team's fifth win in a row.

The two squads went back-and-forth in scoring throughout the first four frames as a sacrifice fly from Matthew Marquez put Simpson (7-1) on the board first and another from Brady Held helped the Storm regain the lead following a Golden Knight homer in the top of the third. Clarkson (2-4) evened the contest once more with a double in the fourth.

The Storm took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when Held and Kaleb Bauer scored two apiece with a pair of doubles. Simpson then took advantage of three consecutive errors in the sixth to stretch the lead to 7-2.

After Clarkson pulled within two with a trio of runs between the seventh and eighth, Bauer brought home what ended up being the winning runs with his second two-run double of the contest. He later teamed up with Ryan Willis to put an end to the Golden Knight comeback with a force out at second.

Bauer finished the game 3-for-5 with a season-high four RBIs, Held drove in three runs with two hits, and Luke Willis notched his sixth multi-hit game of the season.

Brady Leonard (1-0) got the win in relief as Simpson used seven pitchers in the game. Leonard, Max Crooks and Eli Feekin all made their first appearance of the season.
