Held breaks strikeout record, Storm sweep Beloit

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Brady Held broke a 17-year-old strikeout record, Kolton Arnold paced the offense with four doubles, and the Simpson College baseball team beat Beloit 3-1 and 3-0 in its first two games at the RussMatt Invitational on Saturday.

Simpson (4-1) had a stellar day on the mound as the trio of Held, Colton Major and Zach Hollingsworth limited the Bucs (1-2) to a .087 batting average with just four hits. Held retired 18 of 24 batters via strikeout in game one, while Major (9) and Hollingsworth (5) combined for 14 more K's in game two to notch the team's first shutout of the year.

At the plate, the Storm were led by Arnold who was 4-for-5 with four doubles and an RBI. Luke Willis drove in a run and finished the day with three hits, and Kaleb Bauer had his third extra-base hit of the season.

Simpson returns to action on Monday with a single game against St. Norbert beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET. The Storm will then make up their game with Farmingdale State on Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET.

Game 1: Simpson 3, Beloit 1 (7 innings)
Held (2-0) started the game with 11-straight strikeouts and continued to dominate the rest of the way, adding eight more K's while allowing just two hits and one walk in a complete-game victory. His 18 strikeouts topped Shawn Parker's previous school record of 14 set on April 15, 2004 against Dubuque.

After a quiet first inning, Arnold started the second with a double to center and L. Willis followed with a single to left. Matthew Marquez drew a walk to load the bases before Arnold scored on a groundout and Keaton DeKock made it 2-0 with an RBI-single. Arnold would score again in the sixth after his second leadoff-double of the game.

Game 2: Simpson 3, Beloit 0 (7 innings)
The two teams lined up in another defensive battle in the nightcap. The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth when Arnold drove Held home with his fourth two-bagger of the day. L. Willis kept the scoring going with a base hit to right field, and Ryan Willis scored on a wild pitch in the final inning to provide Simpson more cushion.

Major (1-1) led things off on the hill and struck out a career-high nine batters while allowing two hits over four and a third innings. Hollingsworth closed the game out for the Storm and also posted a career-high strikeout total with five.
